In my last post I wrote about setting goals for the New Year. It is imperative that we write things out in detail and really take the time to plan and get specific. However, a huge part of goal success actually has nothing to do with how well you write them out, but rather if you can stay ACCOUNTABLE. Many of us, in fact I’d say the majority of us, need some kind of outer accountability in order to stay on track. That’s why I recommend involving a friend, or better yet, a group, as part of your New Year’s Resolution. If you can find people who have the same goals as you, or are driven by similar interests, you can help to keep each other focused and motivated. It’s a brilliant solution! And now, with social media, it’s easier than ever to find someone to connect with.
For some reason we tend to let ourselves off the hook pretty easily, we don’t mind the disappointment. But generally speaking, we tend to care more if we know others are counting on us and rooting for our success. We don’t want to let them down. Even if they’re not in the same room as us, holding our hands and stopping us from grabbing that cookie, they’re in our heads, we can hear them as though they’re standing right beside us. We know that we have to check in with them later, we know that we’ll have to confess what we did. So we pull our hand out of the cookie jar, we grab an apple, and we walk away. Nobody wants to be a liar. It doesn’t feel good deep inside. We want to be real, authentic, honest. We want to support others, and be supported ourselves.
