How many time have you said that you need more balance in your life? That if you just had more balance, all your problems would magically be solved. You could finally focus on eating better, being consistent with exercise, and focusing on your health. If only you could find this mythical thing they call “balance”, all would finally be well in the world!
Well… I call bullshit on balance. When have you EVER sat there and thought: “AHHHHHH, here we are, there it is, everything is perfect, things are running smoothly. I have arrived. I AM BALANCED”. Probably never! And even if you have been there, how long did it last? A day? Maybe a week? Then something comes along your path and you’re thrown off course once more. Well I have news for you, that’s called LIFE. And if you continue to wait for the “perfect time” to focus on your nutrition, to start your fitness program, to begin that meditation practice you keep talking about, YOU WILL NEVER START. EVER. Perhaps that seems like a harsh statement, but take an honest look at your past decisions and I can guarantee that this rings true for the majority of you.
You need to adjust your mindset. Let go of the idea that you have to be perfect, that you have to follow a set program, that you have to be strict and rigid with your routine. NO. You actually need to flow with the ups and downs of your life. NO ONE has the unique set of stressors and circumstances that you do. So the first thing you must do is STOP COMPARING YOURSELF to others. Stop buying programs or following templates that were made for someone else! Own your life, AS IT IS, and work within it. THAT is the only way you will ever be able to find health and happiness.
Accept the fact that your life will probably never be “balanced”. There will always be something around the corner to throw you off track. The only thing we can do is to take action every single day towards our health. Make the CHOICE. You may feel like you have no control over your circumstances, but you really do! So I challenge you to start NOW. Not on a particular date, not after this holiday, or that event. NOW, this moment. Do something positive for your health TODAY.
It’s not easy, and I don’t mean to portray it that way. We need resilience and strength in order to flow with life’s challenges while maintaining our health as a priority. It takes practice, it takes failed attempts and hard lessons learned. But YOU CAN DO IT. I do it, and I know many women who do it too. It IS possible to grocery shop, prepare food in advance, work 2 jobs, exercise, clean your house, take care of your kids, get to bed early, and maintain your relationships. It truly is!
ONE thing you can do NOW is write out your goals, take a close look at your schedule, jot down EVERYTHING you do in the day. Pencil in the things you want to prioritize, and then DO THEM.
Below is a typical calendar of mine. I write in my workouts, my clients and classes, my daughters activities, etc. Everything is colour coded and organized. When there is a window of time, I take action. Some days I make the choice to do laundry, while other days I choose to relax. But the choice is mine, and I own it.
